Septic System Selection
Selected septic systems are pre-engineered and selected by a Qualified Person (QP) or professional engineer based on certain criteria. They usually require less time before construction and because they are pre-designed they save you money. However, not all sites are suitable and you may require a professional engineer to design one for you.
First, talk to a QP or professional engineer. They will ask some questions about your site and requirements.
If your site is a candidate for a selected septic system, a QP or professional engineer will make a site visit, take some measurements and evaluate the native soil. Then they select a suitable septic system and submit a notification form to Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change. NSE will issue an Notification number.
Once the notification number is issued and you have chosen a contractor, a 24 hour construction alert form is submitted to NSE. Then the septic system can be constructed.
Important!!! Your contractor must have an active certificate of qualification as an Installer. You can find Installers on the WWNS and the Nova Scotia Environment and Climate Change websites. You can also find Qualified Persons and Professional Engineers here as well.
Finally, a QP or professional engineer inspects your septic system to ensure it meets the standard. After inspection, they grant permission to cover and issue a Certification of Installation after grass is established.
It is highly recommend checking out A Homeowners Guide to Septic Systems on the NSE website. If you already have an existing septic system, you may be interested in our video inspection services.
